Gully Boy took a good opening of around 40-45% overall while cities like Mumbai and Pune took a blockbuster opening which can compare with the biggest of films. The opening of this film was far bigger than Padmaavat and Simmba in Mumbai,Thane and Pune. This is probably due to the local feel of the film.
The film had a Thursday release because of Valentines Day. It is not an official holiday but collections do get a boost. The last two years have seen the release of films like Jolly LLB 2 and Pad Man and they got a boost of 25-30% despite not having much for the youth. Gully Boy should get a bigger boost as its a film for the youth with youth stars but it will be the collections tomorrow which will tell how much the boost was.
The film is econically safe as most of the cost to make it and release it will be recovered from digital, satellite and music but that is the case with most major films but the theatrical run is most important for the people involved to benefit.

URI – The Surgical Strike has been making waves in Bollywood. Having released over a month ago, the movie is still going strong in theatres. And the josh is not stopping! The Aditya Dhar directorial is now in its sixth week, eating into the box office results of big Bollywood movies like Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. As Gully Boy releases this week, we wonder if URI – The Surgical Strike can keep up with its winning streak. But this Vicky Kaushal starrer has already beaten many box office records so there’s no stopping it. Here are the film’s biggest achievements till date:
URI – The Surgical Strike released early this year but two weeks after Simmba, Bollywood’s last blockbuster. While the film’s first week was comparatively slow, it slowly picked up in the second and third week and is currently unstoppable at the box office. The film has emerged a blockbuster and continues its run despite the release of big Bollywood movies later in January.
Passing the 100-crore mark is a new benchmark set for Bollywood movies. While earlier this was only achievable by films starring the biggies of Bollywood like Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman, last year saw a trend of content-rich films like Raazi, Badhaai Ho, Stree, and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety easily cruising past INR 100 crores in the box office and URI has joined them.
While two of Vicky Kaushal’s films have crossed the 100-crore mark in the last year (Raazi and Sanju), URI – The Surgical Strike is the actor’s first solo hit. As for the film’s supporting character played by Yami Gautam, this happens to be the actress’ highest grossing film till date, replacing the previously held record by Kaabil (2016), which earned INR 103.40 crores.
URI – The Surgical Strike was definitely the biggest hit of its week biting into the box office earnings of Bombairiya and The Accidental Prime Minister. However, good reviews and positive word-of-mouth led to a surge in the movie sales, earning the film bigger bucks in the second weekend than the first one and being the only Hindi film to do achieve this feat.
As the Indian audience started veering towards content-rich films, hits like Raazi, Badhaai Ho, and Stree quickly made big bucks. URI – The Surgical Strike broke the records held by these films and crossed the 100-crore benchmark faster than any of them. It also broke the previously held record by Baahubali 2: The Conclusion of Day 23 and Day 24 box office collections
Gully Boy has seen a good advance with collections set to reach 7-7.5 crore nett pre release at the end of business today for the four day weekend. Its not a huge advance but good for this film. It is regional specific with Mumbai city and Bangalore seeing a very strong advance along with Pune. The other two big metros Delhi city and Kolkata should end up with good results by the time the advance finishes tonight.
The huge plus for the film is its Valentines Day on Thursday which gives collections a 30-40% boost and this film is a youth film with stars popular among the youth. It is this audience that propels the Valentines Day collections. The film will surprise if it finds any appreciation in the core Hindi belts but if the five metros really take to the film then these also can give a big enough number. The biggest film of these lot is Barfi! in 2012 which got 1.2 crore footfalls and that today for a metro film with all the tax changes and rises in ticket pricing that many footfalls can give a big NETT number.
The director belongs to that brigade of directors like Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj etc that has the European style of story telling which limits the reach of the film. Most of these directors have faded as the younger stars have slowly started to find out that they cant deliver the sort of HITS they need. The director of Gully Boy Zoya Akhtar has been luckier that after a dud start with Luck By Chance got a Hrithik Roshan / Katrina Kaif at their peak with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara(2011) but could only deliver 90 crore nett when these stars should have done 125 crore nett eyes closed at that time.
Then the ensemble Dil Dhadakne Do did even less in 2015 and now again has got lucky this time with Ranveer Singh / Alia Bhatt at the right time. A Ranveer Singh / Alia Bhatt today is probably not at the level of Hrithik Roshan / Katrina Kaif in 2012 but its a huge cast for a director who has not delivered a film which has been appreciated across India. The better casts could be coming as Zoya Akhtar is an industry product while the other directors in this brigade are outsiders. She is basically the last one of this brigade standing today thanks to the stars and lets see if this status remains in a week or so. If a film can today can reach a larger audience then even huge numbers are even possible with non star films as can be seen with Uri - The Surgical Strike. This started as a metro film but then spanned its wings to even score in Bihar. it will be a very interesting week at the box office.
